Architecture is a starting point

The chip matters. The implementation decides what you hear.

The archive spans TDA1541, TDA1549, PCM63, PCM1798, CS4398, WM8741 and other converter families. Those architectures are treated as different starting conditions, not fixed sonic destinies.

The tonal descriptions above summarise Luke’s own research and listening framework. They are not claims that every implementation of a given DAC chip will sound the same.
Raw and refined

Why a technically imperfect starting point can remain interesting.

One of the archive’s strongest themes is preservation before polish.

“Raw” does not mean noisy or crude here. It means a source that seems to preserve energy, texture, transient life and harmonic information before later stages shape the presentation. “Refined” can mean genuinely better control and lower noise, but the concern is refinement that also removes contrast or human immediacy.

After conversion

I/V, filtering and analogue output are part of the DAC.

I/V stage

Where current-output DACs are translated into a usable voltage can strongly influence noise, linearity and subjective character.

Analogue filtering

Filter choices affect bandwidth, phase and how aggressively ultrasonic conversion artefacts are managed.

Output stage

Op-amp, discrete or valve stages can change drive, harmonic balance and interaction with the following preamp or amplifier.

Listening principle

Do not attribute every audible difference to the silicon. A DAC is a complete analogue-digital system.

Architecture as a progression of questions

No grade suffix or converter topology is allowed to become a substitute for listening.

ArchitectureWhy it entered the researchWhat later work addsStatus
TDA1549An inexpensive, directly experienced starting point with a relatively simple Philips player.Valve SRPP output, regulator work and later preamp interaction proved implementation could transform the role of the source.Built / heard
CS4398A modern, clean counterpoint in the Topping D30.iFi power and OPA445BM/ADA4627 experiments showed that solid-state analogue stages can supply body and dimensionality without becoming valves.Built / heard
TDA1541 non-AResearch attraction to raw timing, textural immediacy and the possibility of NOS/clock/tube modification.Later master documents place it as the emotional branch rather than the single “best DAC”.Exploring
PCM1798A current-output delta-sigma DAC chosen as the core of the planned Lampucera-style build. The project becomes less about the bare chip and more about direct I/V, 6N16B SRPP, power supply, line control and output coupling. In development
PCM63Research into classic Burr-Brown multibit conversion and the Monarchy M24.K/K2/Y/KY selection discussions became secondary to the larger point: tube stage, I/V, power and system synergy still decide the complete presentation.Exploring
WM8741 / other modern DACsUseful contrast for smoothness, ease and implementation flexibility.Kept as part of a palette rather than ranked absolutely above or below the vintage routes.Reference research

The research documents sometimes use strong tonal shorthand for different chips and grades. On the public site those descriptions are treated as hypotheses and listening vocabulary, not universal electrical facts. A DAC architecture earns its place only after the complete implementation is heard.

Older multibit branch

PCM56 is useful because it clarifies what the archive values in TDA1541 and PCM63.

A December 2025 comparison maps PCM56 as smoother, more predictable and gently rounded, while TDA1541 non-A is treated as more characterful, dynamic and emotionally immediate. The comparison is research language, but it reveals the decision framework.

PCM56

Earlier Burr-Brown multibit lineage, one DAC per channel, studied as a stable and smooth architecture with less of the dramatic dimensionality sought elsewhere.

TDA1541 non-A

Single-chip Philips multibit branch retained for rawness, tone, timing and the possibility that a carefully controlled output stage can preserve emotion without leaving the presentation rough.

PCM63-KY and the analogue question

Resolution is only useful if it remains part of the musical event.

The July 2025 analogue/digital research uses PCM63-KY as the extreme case: a converter imagined as sufficiently resolving to expose very low-level encoded relationships, but still dependent on the surrounding analogue or tube stage for body, dimensional flow and emotional coherence.

This is not a claim that KY can recover information absent from the recording. The proposition is that an unusually resolving, well-implemented chain may make information already present easier to perceive.
