A vocabulary built from repeated listening

What do “body”, “air” and “holography” actually mean?

The same words recur across valves, DACs, headphones and loudspeakers. Here they become a practical listening language rather than a collection of audiophile adjectives.

Truth
Not an absolute laboratory claim. In this archive it means a presentation that preserves timing, tonal relationships, dynamics, human phrasing and the emotional intent of the recording without drawing attention to the replay system.
Presence
The feeling that a performer occupies the listening space with believable scale and immediacy.
Intimacy
Closeness and communication, especially through voice, without simply pushing the whole midrange forwards.
Body
Harmonic and dynamic substance. The difference between hearing the edge of a voice and sensing the chest, breath and room around it.
Air
Ambient and low-level information that helps sounds exist within space. It can increase with treble extension, but brightness alone is not air.
Holography
Width plus depth plus stable image bodies, decay and room information. A wide stage without physical placement is not enough.
Scale
The believable size and dynamic reach of instruments, voices and venue, not merely loudness or bass quantity.
Coherence
The parts remain individually intelligible while still belonging to one musical event.
Liquidity
A sense of continuity and flow between notes, often contrasted in the notes with mechanical or etched reproduction.
Grounding
Weight, stability and a low-level sense of foundation that prevents detail and stage from becoming insubstantial.
The paradoxes

The target often lives between apparent opposites.

Warmwithout blur
Detailedwithout dissection
Intimatewithout congestion
Spaciouswithout remoteness
Dynamicwithout fatigue
The recurring target

Body + intimacy + openness + atmosphere + dimensionality + speed + coherence. The best results in the archive are often the ones that manage several of these at once rather than maximising one.

“You can zoom in and out according to what you want to place your focus on, yet you hear the sum and also the parts.”Listening note on Voskhod 6J1P-EV valves, September 2022
Why it matters in advisory

A client rarely needs “more Hi-Fi”. They need a more accurate description of what is missing.

“I want it warmer” can mean more harmonic body, less upper-mid glare, closer vocals, softer transient edges or simply a better recording. Those are very different interventions.

Translate

Turn everyday reactions into a more precise sonic target.

Locate

Work out whether the source, amplification, transducer, room or mastering is actually responsible.

Change proportionally

Make the smallest change that addresses the real problem before replacing whole systems.

Cross-system definitions

The words became useful because they survived different equipment.

WordWhat it means hereExamples that clarified it
BodyHarmonic and physical completeness, especially through voices and instruments, without simply increasing bass.OPA445BM fullness; Mullard intimacy; M15i Blue vocal wholeness; P17 scale.
AirSpace, decay and atmosphere that can be heard around events without making upper treble itself the centre of attention.GE JAN5654W; Grado openness; CuTF exploration; dipole room field.
IntimacyThe sense that the performer is present and close while retaining believable size and surrounding acoustic.Mullard 8100, D-211 vocals, Askew/BRZ, M15i Blue.
HolographyImage body plus depth, placement, decay and ambient continuity, not stage width alone.OPA445BM, D-211, P17, the later M15i mapping.
CoherenceThe ability to hear detail without breaking the song into unrelated objects.Russian Little Dot valves, M15i Blue, P17 final listening note.
Raw / refinedA spectrum between immediate texture and polished control, with neither side automatically more truthful.TDA1541 research, tape analogies, PCM63 research, modern DAC/op-amp contrasts.
The vocabulary is cumulative

The 2026 M15i/System Integration document is valuable because it explicitly maps a new product back to years of prior tube, op-amp, portable and P17 notes instead of inventing a fresh vocabulary for every review.
