OPA445BM: body and wholeness
Luke’s notes on the rare Gold Seal metal-can OPA445BM repeatedly return to fullness, intimacy, transparency and a sense that the music arrives as a complete event rather than isolated detail.
ADA4627-1BRZ: private-performance detail
The BRZ is described as front-row, detailed and alluring without losing emotion. In the same chain it can feel more like a private performance, while the OPA445BM feels larger and more grounded.
Tube rolling tells the same story
Voskhod, Mullard and GE driver valves in the Little Dot MKII are valued for different combinations of grounding, richness, air and atmosphere. The point is not a universal ranking. It is a palette.
Choose with ears and heart, then check the conclusion again later.
The useful comparison was never “valves versus op-amps”
The archive contains excellent examples of both. OPA445BM could sound full, grounded, smooth and intimate. ADA4627-1BRZ could be front-row, highly detailed and holographic without losing musicality. The Russian Little Dot valves could be balanced and expansive; Mullards more intimate; GE more atmospheric.
That makes the real question one of proportion. Does the chain need more density, more space, more speed, or simply less noise? An op-amp can supply body. A valve can supply openness. Architecture and implementation matter before the device category.
The D30 and Little Dot formed a particularly useful pair
Once the D30 received the iFi supply and OPA445BM, it became a strong solid-state reference source. Feeding that into the Little Dot created a chain in which source solidity and valve-stage choice could be adjusted separately. The later system-integration notes explicitly return to this as one of the most interesting home headphone paths.
Tube families became a language
Mullard 8100 Gold Pin represented richness and front-row presence. GE JAN5654W represented air and atmosphere that remained intimate. Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV became the balanced/grounded centre. The M15i Blue choice in 2026 was then judged against this established map rather than reviewed in isolation.
